What I wish I would have known (From one new parent to another)

Ch-ch-ch-changes…
Prenatal

  • Final Countdown: The last month of pregnancy can be an emotional rollercoaster: Allow your emotional state to be what it is-take good care of yourself

  • Plan Childcare Options Now: Have several childcare and back to work options

  • Family Matters: Relationships, particularly with your own parents/caregivers, may intensify. Honor this process

  • Learn the Difference between Postpartum Depression and Baby Blues

  • Support is Unique: Arrange a postpartum support plan now. What works for one family may not work for yours—tailor it to your needs. Example:You may or may not want visitors when baby arrives.

Postpartum

  • Stamina: The early days can feel like a marathon and take mental, emotional and physical stamina: you have what it takes!

  • Breastfeeding & Cluster Feeding: Breastfeeding may take some time to get the hang of -it can feel like a full-time job. Your baby may need to eat again soon after the last feed-feeding in clusters is temporary….until the next growth spurt

  • Limited Awake Time: Babies have a narrow awake window and can get overstimulated easily. They need to sleep often. Look at a schedule of how much awake/asleep time they need based on age.

  • Not all Moments are Equal: This mantra helped when moments felt impossible—the next moment will likely bring something different. Baby phases change quickly but can feel like they go on forever—moments with child are like tides going in and out.

  • Connection: These moments are deep, profound and magical and may happen sooner, later or feel different than expected. Just like babies, parents experiences’ are diverse.
